Politics / US election: Voters in battleground states prefer Trump over Biden - WSJ
« Last post by Rajih on April 04, 2024, 11:21:37 AM »

Former President Donald Trump tops President Joe Biden in all but one of the crucial battleground states that will likely decide their 2024 rematch, a new polling reveals.

With seven months to go until the presidential election, a Wall Street Journal survey released Tuesday indicated Trump with the edge over the president in six of the seven states polled: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina.

The survey showed Trump holds a six-point lead over Biden in North Carolina in a ballot that also includes third-party and independent candidates.

Trump also has a five-point lead in Arizona, a four-point edge in Nevada, and three-point advantages in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, the former president edges Biden by a single point in Georgia, with the two tied in Wisconsin.

Trump held similar leads when those questioned were given a head-to-head matchup between the former president and Biden.

Recall that Biden narrowly edged Trump in all the battlegrounds tested, other than North Carolina, to win the White House in 2020.

However, the new survey revealed that Biden also had a negative job performance rating in all seven battleground states.

On the flip side, voters in every state except Nevada had a favorable opinion of Trump’s time in the White House.

Respondents who participated in the survey said they trust Trump to handle the economy and immigration over Biden, while the Democrat president, however, was the preferred candidate to deal with the issue of abortion.

Recent concerns over Biden’s physical fitness was also mirrored in the polling results as about 48% of voters believe Trump is more fit to serve as president over only 28% who see Biden as having the mental and physical fitness to serve another four-year term as president.

SpyLoaded News / Arraignment of Binance, executives suffers setback
« Last post by Rajih on April 04, 2024, 11:20:14 AM »

The arraignment of Binance Holdings Limited and two of its executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, on Thursday, could not proceed due to the inability of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to effect service of the charge on the defendants.

When the matter was called for the defendants to take their plea before Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court, Abuja, only Gambaryan was represented by a lawyer.

The News Agency of Nigeria observes that neither the company nor Anjarwalla, who recently escaped from lawful custody, was represented by a counsel.

However, Gambaryan’s lawyer, Chukwuka Ikwuazo, SAN, told the court that his client had not been served with the charge, hence, his arraignment cannot proceed.

FIRS lawyer, Moses Ideho, though acknowledged that the agency had not served Gambaryan’s with the charge, said all efforts to do so proved abortive because the defendant could not be reached at the EFCC’s detention.

Ideho then prayed the court to serve Gambaryan in the open court and the judge directed that the charge be served on him in the dock.

The lawyer, therefore, sought a stand-down of the matter or an adjournment to enable Gambaryan consult with his lawyer.

Ikwuazo did not object to an oral application for adjournment and the matter was adjourned until April 19 for him to take his plea.

DAILY POST had reported that the FIRS said it will arraign Binance Holdings Limited, Gambaryan and fleeing Anjarwalla, on allegations bordering on tax evasion on April 4th.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024, the three defendants will equally be arraigned before Justice Nwite on four counts.

The defendants will be arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on alleged tax evasion.

In the charge dated and filed March 22 by the FIRS, the defendants were alleged to have committed the offence on or about February 1.

Count one alleged that while involved in carrying and offering services to subscribers on their platform, known as Binance, they failed to register with the FIRS, for the purpose of paying all relevant taxes administered by the service.

The offences are said to be punishable under Sections 8 and 29 of the VAT Act of 1993 (as Amended), Section 40 of the FIRS Establishment Act, 2007 (as amended) and under provisions of Section 94 of the Companies Income Tax Act (as amended) respectively.

Business / Binance executives to be charged for money laundering
« Last post by Mr. Babatunde on April 03, 2024, 08:25:02 AM »

Barring any change, the Abuja Federal High Court has scheduled the arraignment of two Binance executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla for Thursday.

Gambaryan and Anjarwalla will be charged before Justice Emeka Nwite on two separate charges.

The one filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which bothers on money laundering, has five counts.

The other, by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, has four counts, in which they were accused of sundry tax infractions.

Anjarwalla who escaped custody on March 22 will be arraigned before Justice Nwite in absentia.

The EFCC, in its charge filed on March 28, accused Binance executives of laundering about $35,400,000.

In count one of the charges, the defendants are alleged to have, between January 2023 and January 2024 in Abuja, carried out the specialised business of other financial institutions without a valid licence

The EFCC said the act constitutes an offence contrary to Section 57(1) and (2) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and was punishable under Section 57(5) of the same Act.

In the charge by the FIRS, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024 filed on March 22, the defendants were alleged to have committed the offence on or about February 1 this year.

In count one, the defendants are accused of failing to register with the FIRS to pay all relevant taxes while carrying out and offering services to subscribers on their platform (Binance).

The FIRS said the act constitutes an offence punishable under Sections 8 and 29 of the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act of 1993 (as Amended), Section 40 of the FIRS Establishment Act, 2007 (as amended) and under provisions of Section 94 of the Companies Income Tax Act (as amended).

On March 18, Justice Nwite had ordered Binance to provide the EFCC with a comprehensive data or information of all those trading on its platform from Nigeria.

The judge granted the interim order in a ruling on an ex-parte motion filed by EFCC’s lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho.

The judge said the interim order was to enable the EFCC to investigate its claim that money laundering and terrorism financing activities were being allowed on Binance’s platform.
