Residents of Salawu Street in the Orile Agege area of Lagos State have said a policeman, Sunday David, was killed while escaping with his friend with the sum of N300, 000.

The residents added that the policeman met his death while trying to assist the friend, identified as Taiwo Balogun, to escape with the money given to them by a suspected Internet fraudster.

Our correspondent had reported on Monday that David, who was attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, was driving in his car with Balogun, when they were attacked and shot dead by their assailants.

Another motorist, identified as Raheem Sulaiman, was said to have sustained gunshot injuries, but survived.


 
The former Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, who confirmed the killings, had said the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, for further investigation.

When our correspondents visited the area on Monday, a police source said Balogun, the policeman’s friend, had just marked one year of his twin brother’s death, when he was killed on Sunday.

On Salawu Street where the incident happened, an eyewitness, who identified himself only as Demola, said Balogun tried to leave with the money but others prevented him.

He said during an altercation that ensued, Balogun called the policeman on the telephone to come to his aid.

He said, “The policeman came in his car to take Balogun away. The other guys resisted and he (David) shot one of them, Raheem Sulaiman, in the neck. He wanted to aid Balogun’s escape. It was greed that killed him. It was after Sulaiman was shot that the boys mobilised and ambushed David’s car around Orile. He and Taiwo (Balogun) were inside the car and both of them were shot dead.”

Another resident, who identified himself as Gbenga Idowu, said David was notorious for threatening people with a gun.

He said, “Everybody knew Sunday (David) in this area. He usually came to Amao pitch, Ile-Pako, to watch football matches. He was fond of carrying a gun around. That day, the youths and the Yahoo boy (scammer) went to a beer parlor near the pitch after a match to relax. The Yahoo boy gave them N300,000 to share. But Taiwo did not want to share the money with anybody. I learnt the policeman was his friend.”
