Business / Refiners kick as Marketers dump Dangote Refinery for imported petrol
« Last post by Miss Ifeoluwa on September 20, 2024, 09:06:17 AM »

Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria has kicked against a move by petroleum marketers to import Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) despite the availability of Dangote Refinery Petrol.

Publicity Secretary of CORAN, Eche Idoko, made this known in a statement condemning the move.

His comments come as a report emerged that 141 million liters of PMS are being conveyed to Nigeria by oil vessels following the full deregulation of the downstream oil sector by the Federal Government.

Recall that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company on Monday announced a fresh price list for its retail outlets nationwide upon the lifting of Dangote Petrol.

According to the NNPCL, the price adjustments will see petrol sold between N950 to N1,019.22 per liter depending on the location.

This comes after NNPCL trucks successfully lifted Petrol from Dangote Refinery on Sunday.

The development had created a price controversy between Dangote Refinery and NNPC. NNPC had insisted that it bought Dangote Petrol at a per liter pump price of N898, but the 650,000 barrels per day Lagos-based refinery had disagreed with the state-owned firm.

However, in the latest move, petrol marketers, who seemed unsatisfied with the price regime of Dangote Refinery, had to consider the importation of petrol.

Reacting to the development, CORAN alleged that some imported petrol was substandard and was blended in Malta or Togo.

“So I would assure you this regime will pay them way better than the regime of importing petroleum products, where they sell to us, substandard products blended in Malta or Togo and imported into our country,” Idoko stated.

He called for backward integration, saying some were afraid that Dangote would become a monopoly.

“The fear marketers are having is that Dangote will become a monopoly, but that has been taken care of by Dangote subscribing to our association.

“With the Petroleum Industry Act in place and all the agencies in play, there is no way that Dangote can become a monopoly”, he said.

Earlier, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority had declared that imported petrol would be subjected to three tests before being allowed to be sold across the country.

NMDPRA spokesperson, George Ene-Ita, disclosed this amid petrol import concerns.

He stressed that marketers with import licenses were free to import PMS but noted that the products must be subjected to three major tests by the agency.

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote had earlier in May 2024 stated that the commencement of his refinery will end fuel importation in Nigeria.

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, allegedly stormed the State Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro, on Wednesday night, September 18,  to forcefully arrest the immediate past Governor Yahaya Bello.

A statement issued by Bello’s Director of Media, Ohiare Michael, alleged that EFCC operatives were shooting sporadically.

“It has come to our notice that people suspected to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are currently around the Kogi Government Lodge, Asokoro, in an attempt to forcefully arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello. They were shooting sporadically.

We want to place it on record that the EFCC should be held accountable if anything untoward happens to him.

Tonight’s attack was needless, as the former governor made himself available to the EFCC in their office for interrogation. The EFCC had no questions to ask Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, but suddenly, they are out to arrest him.

This action is condemnable. They have displayed the very reason many Nigerians believe they were fighting political battles instead of the mandate to fight corruption. This action reflects much more than the fight against corruption. We will keep Nigerians posted.”

Politics / Former Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello Finally Honours EFCC Invitation
« Last post by Rajih on September 18, 2024, 11:35:05 AM »

The embattled former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has agreed to honour the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

It could be recalled that on August 20, the court of appeal in Abuja ordered Bello to surrender himself for arraignment by the EFCC.

The EFCC subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest, declaring him wanted after repeatedly failing to comply with court orders to surrender himself for arraignment.

Bello, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is currently facing a multitude of charges, including 19 counts, which include allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and the misappropriation of public funds amounting to approximately N80.2 billion, as alleged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday (today) by his media office, it was revealed that Bello’s decision to honour EFCC’s invitation was made after consultations with his family, legal team and political allies.

In April, the EFCC had declared him wanted after he reportedly shunned a series of invitations and resisted arrest.

Business / Meet Adeola Sowemimo, The First Nigerian Woman To Fly Boeing 787
« Last post by Rajih on September 17, 2024, 03:58:21 PM »

Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo has made remarkable strides in a field traditionally dominated by men.

She is Nigeria’s first female Boeing 787 pilot, flying long-distance routes for Qatar Airways. Her story shows that with hard work, focus, and the right support, anyone can achieve great things, regardless of gender.

Around the world, women are stepping into roles that were once considered “for men only.” Aviation, too, is undergoing this shift, and Captain Adeola is a shining example of how women can succeed in male-dominated spaces.

At just 31 years old, Captain Adeola is making history. She is the first Nigerian woman to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Qatar Airways.

This advanced airplane can reach speeds of Mach 0.85, or about 1,024 kilometers per hour. Adeola pilots this impressive machine, safely flying 250 passengers across the world.

Her path to becoming a Dreamliner pilot wasn’t easy. Adeola’s story is one of determination, strength, and a love for flying.

Adeola was born on October 16, 1990, in Kaduna, Nigeria. She went to several schools in both Kaduna and Ibadan due to challenges like religious conflicts.

Despite these difficulties, Adeola remained focused and completed her secondary education at First Baptist Model High School in Kaduna in 2007.

After completing secondary school, she started a pre-degree course at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Oyo State.

But her passion for flying took over, and she enrolled at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria. She completed her aviation training from 2009 to 2010 before going to Florida, USA, for further training at Sunrise Aviation Inc.

Once her pilot training was done, Adeola returned to Nigeria to start her flying career.

In 2013, Adeola began working for Medview Airlines in Lagos as a First Officer on Boeing 737 planes.

Her skills quickly earned her a promotion to fly the Boeing 767-300ER. But her biggest breakthrough came in 2018 when she joined Qatar Airways as the first Nigerian woman to pilot the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Her skills have taken her on transatlantic flights with the Boeing 767, and in 2020, she started flying the Lagos-to-Abuja route for Qatar Airways. Adeola now joins a group of pioneering African female pilots like Chinyere Kalu, Nigeria’s first female commercial pilot, and Asli Hassan Abade, Somalia’s first female aviator.

Captain Adeola is not just a successful pilot; she’s also a wife and mother. She married Seun Funmi Olamilekan Sowemimo on April 22, 2017, and together they have a family. Managing her career and home life is no easy task, but Adeola has shown that it is possible to do both.

Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo is more than just a pilot. She represents hope, determination, and the idea that women can achieve anything if they put their minds to it. Her story is a source of inspiration for young African girls, showing them that with effort, they too can reach their dreams.

Adeola’s journey is a reminder that hard work and perseverance can help break barriers, no matter how high.

She is proof that nothing is impossible, and her story will continue to inspire many for years to come.
