●We are Oliver Twists- NLC Chairman

Governor Ademola Adeleke has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to workers’ welfare, affirming that his records on labour matters confirmed his genuine love for Osun workers.

Addressing the May Day rally in Osogbo today,  the State Governor said his government has paid over Two Billion Naira in palliative wage award to public servants and pensioners, telling the workers “you have in me and my team fellow comrades who are determined to give workers the best of work environment and attractive incentives.

“We are a government that walks the talk in terms of labour friendly policies and programmes. Our leadership is by all accounts, for the labour, by the labour and of the labour movement.

“We all know it has never happened for a political party to place workers welfare as the first item on its manifesto for the state. Our party and government made a conscious decision to place workers at the core of our governance agenda”, the Governor said.

According to the State Governor, the decision to have workers welfare as number one agenda was borne out of “the top notch value we place on the workforce as the engine room of government.

“As a fellow Comrade, I need no convincing to accept and implement a series of policies and programmes favorable to the labour movement”, Governor Adeleke said, thanking the labour movement for appreciating our records of achievements.

“I commend you for the award you gave me, especially the grade A marks you awarded me on several aspects of workers’ welfare and promotion.

“I look back to what we met on the ground in November 2022 and I am proud to declare that I have kept faith with our promises, plans and agenda for our workers”, the Governor.

He listed his achievement in the labour sector to include the following:

“We have cash backed promotion of staff we met on the ground in 2022; We have implemented gradual defrayment of unpaid deductions from workers' salaries by the previous administrations

“We introduced gradual systematic payment of half salaries owed workers and retirees by past administrations. By now, we are in the process of paying the 6th month for active and retired workers while we have gone far in paying workers not yet bonded.

“Our government has also paid over Two Billion Naira for palliative wage awards from December 2023 till date. The payments include Fifteen Thousand  Naira for public servants and Ten Thousand Naira for pensioners.

“We have implemented and cash backed the 2023 promotion for all categories of civil servants at all levels. At the State level alone excluding tertiary institutions, local governments and primary schools, over 2000 civil servants have been promoted with cash backing

“We appointed several Permanent Secretaries thereby eradicating the wicked, obnoxious policy of the past administrations of the use of Coordinating Directors to serve as Accounting Officers of MDAs. The process is a continuous one as I had earlier promised as the Head of Service will be directed to do the needful at the appropriate time

“We have enrolled numerous retirees on the OHIS scheme to ensure they have access to quality health care

“We have continued to pay  full salaries to workers and retirees at all levels without fail despite the tight financial situation. As I speak, we have paid April salaries and allowances

“We have continued to release bond certificates to retirees under the pension scheme which to date has run into billions of naira at both state and local government levels.

“This month, I have the plan to release another round of bonds to retirees in billion to cushion the biting effect of the present economy

“We are in the process of engaging new teachers at both primary and secondary levels. The process which is being coordinated by the HOS and the Agencies under the education sector is ongoing”, he noted.

On the current fuel scarcity, Governor Adeleke said  the state Taskforce on petroleum products has deployed monitoring teams to ensure that fuel hoarding is stopped as supply increases.

On current food inflation, the Governor said his government is working to create special food marts across the state, adding that “such centers will sell food items at controlled prices to address the current high level of food inflation

He however warned public servants against violation of the official secret act, adding “we must stop divulging official documents and promising to sanction any official caught in this condemnable act”

The Chairman of the Osun State Council, Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Abimbola Arapasopo in his address commended the State Governor for his landmark achievements in support of workers, confirming that “Osun Workers have never have it so good”

He used the occasion to submit a list of demands to the State Governor , adding “ We are Oliver Twist asking for more.”

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi; the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina; members of the State Executive Council; Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Honourable Tunji Adeleke; and other state officials.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison for failing to establish adequate anti-money laundering protections. Zhao, once the head of the largest crypto exchange in the world, pleaded guilty in November 2023.

Judge Richard Jones says that Zhao prioritized “Binance’s growth and profits over compliance with US laws and regulations.” While Jones doesn’t think Zhao is likely to reoffend, the scale of the crime is notable.

In November, Zhao struck a deal with the U.S. government to resolve a multiyear investigation into Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. As part of the settlement, Zhao stepped down as the company's CEO.

Zhao is accused of willfully failing to implement an effective anti-money laundering program as required by the Bank Secrecy Act, and of allowing Binance to process transactions involving proceeds of unlawful activity, including between Americans and individuals in sanctions jurisdictions.

The U.S., ordered Binance to pay $4.3 billion in fines and forfeiture. Zhao agreed to pay a $50 million fine.

Binance has separately been sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over the alleged mishandling of customer assets and the operation of an illegal, unregistered exchange in the U.S.

The action against Binance and its founder was a joint effort by the Department of Justice, the CFTC and the Treasury Department, though the SEC was notably absent.

Ayodele Agboola Foundation(AAF), a non-governmental organization based in Nigeria, has provided educational scholarships to another set of students in public Primary,Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Osun State.

The scheme is designed to provide support to brilliant and academically sound students from less privileged families.

According to the charity, the scholarship to beneficiaries who recently gained admission into higher institutions in Osun, covers each student’s application, acceptance, registration, examination, and tuition fees.

The Chairman and Founder of AAF, Comrade Ayodele Agboola, in a statement released shortly after the official presentation of the 2024 scholarship award  to beneficiaries at the Ila-Orangun campus of Ekiti State University(EKSU), noted that the NGO is interested in contributing to the growth of the major sector responsible for shaping Nigeria's future.

According to the philanthropist, "We can further develop our nation through education. AAF's interest is in building educational legacies and nurturing children who are the future of our great nation.

“By investing in the educational development of the younger generation, the future of our communities is secured and assured.

"AAF's scholarship scheme for students in Osun is hinged on the passion of the charity's executives to transform the society.

"Our youths have great potential, and by investing in their educational development, we won’t be bothered about what the future holds,” he said

The philanthropist further revealed that several millions of Naira has been doled out to help students studying at the Osun State University, Ekiti State University and the Osun State Polytechnic in Iree, among others.

Agboola explained that the Foundation is all about bringing succor to humanity in  general.

He called on the benefiting students to concentrate on their studies in a bid to justify the humongous resources expended on the programme.

A beneficiary and 100-level Law student at the Osun State University, Taiwo Oladipo, who spoke on behalf of others, described the scholarship as a dream come true.

He thanked Comrade  Agboola for prioritizing education, saying that it is the best way to change the narrative of Osun State and the nation at large.

" I must sincerely thank AAF for placing a premium on human development. I am excited that the donor has deemed it fit to add his quota to developing a critical aspect of the society.

"I can only pray to God to continue to bless the Foundation with the requisite resources.” Taiwo Oladipo said.

The undergraduate also promised to study harder to achieve his academic goals.

Recall that in November 2023, the Foundation paid the tuition fees of over 20 indigent students in Ila-Orangun Grammar School, Ila, Osun State.

AAF was established several years ago  to provide humanitarian and welfare services to vulnerable members of the society.

NEW LIFE is a horror thriller with a dramatic edge, as it’s quite slow-burn. It’s essentially a virus thriller where we see the effects of the disease, and they’re looking mighty zombie-like. Someone mentions the word "Ebola,"  but clearly something else is going on.

Despite a very simple plot and a runtime of just 1 hour and 25 minutes, it’s a movie that packs a real punch. The strong cast and efficient storytelling deserve credit for this experience.

When we meet Jess in the opening scene, she’s already a woman on the run. We just don’t know why exactly, but then neither does she. All she knows is that someone is after her, so she’s desperate to cross the Canadian border to escape them.

On a solo mission to get closer to her than the clumsy men, who look straight out of Men in Black or something, is a woman. Her name is Elsa, and she’s quite a resourceful agent. When we meet her, we discover that she’s recently been given a life-altering diagnosis, which is catching up on her health. Fast!

Both Jess and Elsa end up in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, which is where Elsa discovers exactly how dangerous Jess is. Also, she finds out why she’s been given this extremely important mission. If she fails, it could cost millions of people their lives.

Also, it isn’t until the end of the movie that Jess finally discovers why she is being hunted down.

We’ve had our eyes on New Life for some time, as it has been playing at film festivals like FrightFest and Fantasia. In fact, it’s been quite the film festival, darling, which is almost always a sign that you have a real treat in store.

Now, we finally had the chance to watch it, and it’s easy to see why it’s been such a darling. Both to audiences and critics.

The story is strong in all its simplicity, so even if I found a few of the story coincidences a bit heavy-handed, it wasn’t so much that I wasn’t still completely enthralled.

Also, with Hayley Erin (The Young and the Restless, Pretty Little Liars) and the always wonderful Sonya Walger (For All Mankind, Lost) in the two lead roles, it’s a treat for all genre fans.

Watch New Life in Theaters or On Demand
This horror thriller is the directorial debut of John Rosman. It’s a critically acclaimed debut, and when you watch this movie, you’ll understand why. There’s a depth and intensity to it that work remarkably well.

John Rosman is the director and writer of New Life, so this is very much his brainchild. Now I’m just hoping he will continue working on genre movies so we can see more from this filmmaker. He even won the 2023 Audience Choice Award for Horror at the Heartland International Film Festival, which speaks volumes to me.

A movie like One Cut of the Dead also won audience awards at film festivals, and that’s why we watched it. If you’ve watched that particular movie, you’ll know it begins as such a weird experience that you want to give up on it. However, when I found out it was an Audience Award winner, I knew I was in safe hands. We ended up giving it a top rating!

For New Life, we didn’t quite reach that elusive top rating. Still, I can imagine future projects from John Rosman could get us there!

New Life is out in US theaters and on demand as of May 3, 2024. Also, it will be available in the UK on digital from June 3, 2024.

SpyLoaded News / Long queues resurfaces in Kwara fuel stations
« Last post by Rajih on April 28, 2024, 08:08:33 AM »

Acute fuel scarcity has hit Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

A survey by DAILY POST in Ilorin on Saturday showed that only few filling stations sold petrol to motorists.

Consequently, long queues of vehicles have resurfaced in the state capital.

The development is coming with outrageous arbitrary fuel pump prices by the few filling stations dispensing the product.

The pump price per litre ranges between N625, to N650 by major marketers and N750, N800 to N1,000 by other marketers depending on the location.

Customers outside the state capital are also forced to pay more as the pump price has reportedly risen to N1,000 and above.

Commercial transporters have also increased transport fares as a result of the arbitrary increase in the pump price of petrol.

Short distances, which hitherto attracted between N100 and N150 in the state capital, now cost N200 and above.

Efforts by DAILY POST to reach officials of the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, in Ilorin, were not fruitful as of the time of this report.

Meanwhile, a manager of one of the stations told DAILY POST that there is shortage of supply by the NNPCL, the sole importer of the product.

He said they were awaiting Dangote Refinery to begin distribution of petrol soon.

According to him, "Government through the Ministry of Education will continue to ensure that the right thing is done for teaching and learning to take place, we will continue to provide the right environment for learning and we will continue monitor and motivate our teachers.

"Parents and guardians also have a critical role to play in complementing government's efforts, a new term is about to commence, parents and guardians should prepare their children very well for the new academic term.
