Court Orders FG To Name Suspected Looters
on: July 05, 2017, 04:19:16 PM

Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ruled that the Federal Government should make public the names of past and present suspected looters.

It also mandated the government to state the circumstances under which the looted funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official.

In 2016, the Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Information, announced that some recoveries had been made from some prominent public and private personalities without stating their names.

The announcement prompted Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) to give the Minister of Information, Lai Muhammed, 14 days to disclose the names of all suspected looters.

The group’s ultimatum elapsed without response from the minister, hence, it took filed a case against the government before Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari-led Federal High court.

In her judgment today (Wednesday), Justice Shagari said: ”the Federal Government has a legally binding obligations to tell Nigerians the names of all suspected looters of the public treasury past and present.”
