SKINAMARINK is a horror film on Shudder that has appeared in festivals and will soon be released in theaters before also appearing on Shudder. Due to its very different approach, it is the kind of horror movie that is only suitable for a small percentage of people. It must be like that at a genre film festival, I can imagine.

However, watching it at home is quite a different experience. Do you know that to really enjoy a comedy, you need to be in the right mood? Well, this movie is the same way. Since the movie doesn't tell a traditional story, you have to give in to the weirdness and darkness (which some might, fairly speaking, call "artsy"). To put it another way, not everyone would enjoy it.

I enjoyed the Skinamarink trailer and loved the eerie feeling it evoked in me, but the movie didn't work for me. Even after watching the trailer for a few days, I started to get shivers when I heard the strange voice saying, "In this house..." Sincerely, it was one of the strongest trailers I had ever seen.

Barbarian and Evil Dead Rise are the only other recent trailers that have provided me with the same information.

However, a compelling trailer is of little use if it does not accurately portray the film. Or, to put it another way, I was unaware that the purpose of this trailer is not to demonstrate the film's tone. It perfectly reflects the movie.

In contrast, the trailer for Barbarian set a strong tone, and the movie itself followed up with a wild and fascinating horror story.

The Skinamarink movie is a more sluggish, gloomier, and bleak version of the trailer.

In a nutshell, the very eerie and creepy tone is what Skinamarink does, and does it well. It's full of strange memories and feelings that may be similar to fears you had as a child. like a bizarre, fever-induced nightmare that lasts a long time and is filled with memories you never made.
If you watch it in a theater and give in to it, I can see how this could work. However, at home, it becomes an oddly disjointed experience. Even if all the lights are turned off, there will still be things that can disturb or interfere, at least for the majority of people, I suspect. a sound made by neighbors or the street. even if it's just your refrigerator or something similar.

Experimenting with a film like Skinamarink outside of a theater is extremely difficult. Due to the fact that this supernatural horror film relies on emotions to be evoked rather than conventional storytelling, it needs a specific audience and setting.

Go see Skinamarink at the theater!
Kyle Edward Ball wrote, directed, and produced this very different horror film. He makes his directorial debut with Skinamarink, which debuted at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada. The film was pirated when it was accidentally made available for download during online screenings through one of the film festivals.

It appears that the pirated versions created an "unprecedented viral sensation for an independently produced horror film" and "took social media by storm." I don't recall ever hearing about this movie or those clips, so it's possible that it was just discussed in other horror circles or that I missed its 15 minutes of viral fame.

In any case, IFC Midnight is now showing the Shudder Original in theaters, so if you're interested, go see it. Just be ready for a very different kind of "movie" that more closely resembles an art installation about horror. It's intense and amazing in many ways, like the latter. I wasn't interested in the movie. I just prefer a longer narrative.

Because that would imply that the movie had some kind of storyline, even the official plot is not really what happens in the movie. It isn't. It more closely resembles a compilation of stuck-out segments from video games. or if you only read every ten pages in a horror novel. It may be a frightening experience, but it is not a real story.

If you're okay with that, go see it right now in theaters and just let yourself be sucked into the experience.

On January 13, 2023, Skinamarink premieres in theaters. It will also make its debut on Shudder later in 2023.
