HELLHOLE is a new Netflix horror movie from the creators of the awesome horror-comedy Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight. That movie even got a sequel – with the obvious title of Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight II – but this new movie is not a horror-comedy. It’s all horror and covers religion, exorcism and the devil!

Of course, this also means that this is a Polish Netflix production (Org. title: Ostatnia Wieczerza). And that is a good thing – as anyone who has watched a Netflix production from Poland will know by now!

Since this is from the filmmakers that gave us Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight on Netflix, Hellhole is also from the same country.

And once again, this Polish Netflix production proves that the production quality out of Poland is absolutely stellar. The Polish filmmakers are not holding back. Whether it’s about religion or a more general social commentary, they go all in when telling a story.

You’ll see many examples of this in this latest Polish Netflix horror movie as well! It takes place in a monastery and covers religion, exorcism, and the devil. Actually, at first it seems like something you’ve seen before, but it has much more to offer.

If you’ve watched a few of the other amazing Polish genre productions on Netflix, you’ll recognize quite a few faces. Obviously, there are actors from Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight. However, there are also actors from The Mire (two seasons on Netflix so far), The Plagues of Breslau, and The Thaw (HBO Max).

The ending of Hellhole movie on Netflix
As always, we don’t do spoilers here at Heaven of Horror. We do, however, make features about the true story behind a movie or “ending explained” pieces. Always separate and with warning of spoilers, so this is meant to be neither.

What I do want to focus on is the strong ending of Hellhole which will no doubt be applauded by some and loathed by others.

Yes, the Polish Netflix horror movie Hellhole does have a very open ending. However, if you’ve been paying attention to the story, it’s also very much on point. Personally, I love bold endings that aren’t preoccupied with tying a nice bow and letting you sleep sound and safe afterward.

For anyone still skipping horror movies that are not in English, you are missing out on so many great productions. Also, with CC [Closed Captions] subtitles in English, you’ll be getting a lot of added features. Or, well, a deeper understanding.

Like when someone is eating food that looks very dubious and the word “Unexpected crunching” appears in the closed captions. Or later, when someone puts their hand into a dark hole and the words “Wet squelching” appear at the bottom of the screen.

I mean, come on, you can’t tell me that doesn’t add to the experience rather than take anything away from it. What I’m saying is that you do not want to skip Hellhole and you certainly shouldn’t just choose the dubbed version.

If you do, you’ll be missing out on some of the above-mentioned closed captions’ descriptions of the events unfolding. And yes, the two examples are taken directly from Hellhole. So, you know, enjoy!

Watch Hellhole on Netflix now!
Hellhole is directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski, who also wrote the screenplay with Mirella Zaradkiewicz. These are also the two people behind the horror-comedy movies Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight. While those movies focus on the fun side of gore and unkillable villains, this one is a very different beast.

With this new Netflix horror movie, there is a focus on horror in the dark and dramatic sense that shows the horrors of human nature.

Also, you should know that the Polish title of Ostatnia wieczerza translates into “Last Supper”. Since this is a movie about exorcism, this should come as no huge surprise. But what the supper in Hellhole consists of, just might.

As an added bonus, the international (and English) title of Hellhole is also much more accurate than you could possibly imagine! The only reason our rating isn’t higher is that the first half is just a tad too slow, but that doesn’t take anything away from the overall experience. If we gave half ratings, we’d be at 3½.

Hellhole is out on Netflix globally from October 26, 2022.
