Saraki stated this on Monday during a courtesy visit from top officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) led by the Chairman of the agency, Ekpo Nta. The senate president complained that the level of corruption in Nigeria had taken a dangerous aspect to the extent that the three levels of government were finding it difficult to pay salaries and provide basic social infrastructure. Saraki said the 8th Senate has a no tolerance level for corruption, adding that corruption is truly affecting the national development of the country. He said: “The cost of corruption on our national life is beyond financial cost. You see in some states now that they are not paying salaries, it had led to poor funding of the education and health sectors and it’s affecting cost of governance and failure of public institutions and infrastructure.” He pledged that the eight senate would work closely with the ICPC and other anti graft agencies to fight the scourge. The chairman ICPC in his response said the Act that established the agency, was the first Act of parliament that addressed corruption directly and that the United Nations convention against corruption came four years later in 2004. In a related development, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a comprehensive relief package valued at over N400bn to put an end to the lingering crisis of unpaid workers salaries in the country.
