The Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr. Nick Wende, who made the appeal yesterday in Makurdi, said the directive became necessary, in view of the threat the increasing water level posed to the safety of those living by the river bank. He said there was an urgent need for those living by the river to move out to avoid being caught unawares by any further surge in the water level. Wende said: River Benue has been rising steadily for sometime now and the fear is that if we continue to have heavy downpours as weve been having for sometime, the river might overflow its banks. That is why the people residing by the bank of the river should relocate without further delay to avoid being caught unawares in order to also avoid any disaster in the state. The commissioner further disclosed that the state government on its part had been working round the clock to ensure the safety of lives and property of the people in the event of any persistent heavy downpour and overflow of the river.
