We understands that Ojukwu slumped and died on Friday at a private hospital in Lagos state, southwest Nigeria. The source, however, told national daily Vanguard that the family had yet to officially issue a statement to this effect. But it was learned that the family has already opened a condolence register for the deceased. Ojukwu had been battling with Bianca, his father’s last wife, over ownership of property belonging to the deceased warlord. His father was a Nigerian military officer, who served as the military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1966. Colonel Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared Eastern Nigeria a sovereign state, which he named Biafra, on 30 May, 1967. This led to a civil war that lasted for three years before the Biafra secessionists surrendered to the Nigerian government.
