According to the residents of the area, the rear end of the building, which had three phases, had already collapsed shortly after a heavy downpour. They said that the deceased persons went on to sleep in the part of the building still standing believing that it would not also cave in. Unconfirmed reports have it that the building was a private hostel accommodation being constructed for the students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
