NBC faces backlash over same complaint during 2026 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony.
Viewers who tuned in to the Winter Olympics closing ceremony on February 22 expressed dissatisfaction, as numerous people criticized NBC for identical grievances while watching the event that marked the conclusion of the Milan-Cortina winter games.
Audiences worldwide who also reported experiencing "whiplash" watched as competitors who participated in the 2026 Winter Olympics received recognition at the ceremony, which officially concluded the celebrations following two weeks of fierce competition in disciplines including downhill skiing, bobsledding, and figure skating.
Yet many viewers also expressed frustration as NBC and other international networks made an unusual choice in how they presented the major event on their channels, particularly in some of the commentary. This follows an Olympic cheating scandal that intensified after a five-word remark was captured on a hot mic.
Expressing their disappointment on X, formerly known as Twitter, audiences cautioned their networks about the volume of advertisements and commercials they endured whilst viewing, and also regarding interviews they deemed irritating.
"NBC, you will once again be dealt with for running like 7 straight minutes of ads DURING the Olympics closing ceremony," one viewer posted. Another commented, "@peacock @Olympics, why are you running multiple commercials back to back during the closing ceremony? Ruins moments to celebrate the athletes."
Additional viewers protested that it disrupted their experience, as this wasn't a routine event and warranted greater consideration. "Trying to see the closing ceremony of the Olympics, but commercials are taking over. Couldn't you just wait a little bit? This isn't an everyday occurrence!" one viewer complained.
"Can NBC do the no ads thing again? What the hell?" another added.
"Why is @nbc trying so hard to ruin this closing ceremony? Just play the entire thing uninterrupted with no commentary, ads, or running a segment during the ceremony," a third posted.
Other viewers expressed frustration that NBC and other broadcasters were using split screens to show both the ceremony and advertisements at the same time.
"NBC. I don't care about your side-by-side ads," one viewer remarked.
"@CBCToronto splitting the TV screen during the Olympics closing ceremony and showing commercials on the bigger half AS SOON as the Canadian athletes walk in is not the way to go," another commented.
The closing ceremonies formally transferred the Games to France, which will serve as host for the 2030 Winter Games, whilst 2034 will bring them back to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States.
The games concluded with Norway claiming the most medals, securing 41 overall, including 18 gold. The United States earned the second-largest medal count, 33, including 12 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze.
The upcoming Olympic event will be the Summer Games, scheduled to occur in Los Angeles, California. Meanwhile, a controversial Winter Olympics athlete has faced fresh accusations of cheating.
