The Chicago Cubs vs. Texas Rangers game will air nationally on ESPN at 7:35 PM ET, with two games also showing on the MLB Network. The bulk of the 15 MLB Opening Day games will be televised on Regional Sports Networks.

Are you ready to watch the 2024 MLB season? Here’s what you need to know about tuning into every Opening Day game, including times, channels, the full game schedule, local blackout restriction workarounds, and more.

Date: Thursday, Mar. 28

TV channel: ESPN, MLB Network, RSNs

Streaming: DirecTV Stream, MLB.TV

When is MLB Opening Day in 2024?

Following the Dodgers-Padres two-game series in Seoul, South Korea, Major League Baseball’s 2024 season begins in earnest this Thursday, Mar. 28, with two Opening Day games overflowing to Friday now due to weather.

What channel is baseball on in 2024?

Currently, nationally televised MLB games air across a mix of FOX, FS1, TBS, ESPN, ABC and MLB Network. The streaming platform, Apple TV+, is the exclusive home of Friday Night Baseball again this year.

And of course, for games that aren’t nationally broadcast, there’s always regional sports networks (RSNs). A majority of MLB Opening Day games will unfortunately only air on RSNs. So if you want to tune into a game that isn’t airing on your local RSN, you may want to try out an MLB.TV subscription (which offers a free trial)

How to watch a blacked out MLB game:

Subscribed to MLB.TV and bummed you can't catch your local team's games without also adding a pricey live TV streaming subscription to your tab? We’ve got a hack for you. Because MLB.TV uses your streaming device's IP address to determine whether or not you get to watch a game, you can still stream local baseball games through MLB.TV with the help of a VPN.

A VPN (virtual private network) helps protect your data, but most importantly for streaming, it can mask your IP address, and help you stream local sports games from anywhere (including the blacked out zone). So pairing a VPN with an MLB.TV subscription should give you the power to stream even in-market games. Looking to try a VPN for the first time? This guide breaks down the best VPN options for every kind of user.

ExpressVPN offers “internet without borders,” meaning you can tune into that in-market baseball game you've been dying to watch but know is blacked out on MLB.TV. All you'll need to do is sign up for ExpressVPN and change your server location to a state where the game isn't restricted (or even to Canada!).

ExpressVPN’s added protection, speed and range of location options makes it an excellent choice for first-time VPN users looking to stretch their streaming abilities, plus, it's Endgadget's top pick for the best streaming VPN. New users can save 49% when they sign up for ExpressVPN’s 12-month subscription. Plus, the service offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, in case you're nervous about trying a VPN.

Patrick Flanary: Offshore wind developments and critically endangered right whales are sharing the same waters off our coast, which has raised the question: how safely can they coexist? CAI’s Eve Zuckoff has spent the last few months talking to scientists and cutting through misinformation. Today, she brings us some answers. Hi Eve.

Eve Zuckoff: Hi there, Patrick!

Patrick Flanary: Vineyard Wind is building 62 turbines south of Martha’s Vineyard – each stands as tall as the Eiffel Tower. There are more projects to come. What are the concerns about what this means for right whales?

Eve Zuckoff: Well, Patrick, there are four main categories of concern for right whales, and they’re important to define because there are just about 360 of these animals left in the world.

The first concern points to the fact that wherever offshore wind farms are being built and maintained, there will be more boats in the water, which increases the chances of a ship strike, or collision between a boat and whale. There’s also a risk that more right whales could get entangled in marine debris that’s coming from the wind farms. The third concern has to do with how wind farms could possibly affect the copepods – these little crustaceans right whales like to eat – by changing ocean circulation.

And finally, exposure to noise is a concern. The concerns have a bit less to do with what happens once wind farms are built because right whales are incredibly used to a loud ocean; they spend a lot of time in shipping lanes. But during construction there are worries that loud pile driving that’s done to anchor wind turbines to the ocean floor could result in hearing impairment, mask right whales’ vocal communication, stress them out, and affect behavior.

That said, more and more research is addressing those concerns. I talked to a professor from the University of Rhode Island who said whales will often swim away from loud sounds, but the worst case scenario is that a loud sound could create temporary hearing loss.

Patrick Flanary: And to be clear: none of these concerns have meant death for right whales.

Eve Zuckoff: Correct. NOAA has said, “There are no known links between large whale deaths and ongoing offshore wind activities.”

That's true even as the bigger projects like South Fork Wind and Block Island Wind have finished construction, and Vineyard Wind is a year and change into building.

Patrick Flanary: So researchers are working to fully understand the risks …  but meanwhile,  misinformation about offshore wind killing right whales has run rampant online. Tell us about that.

Eve Zuckoff: Sure. In recent years we’ve seen these grassroots, very local groups start to form, saying they oppose offshore wind because of concerns about whales. One of the more local groups would be Nantucket Residents for Whales (formerly Nantucket Residents Against Turbines). They’re among a few groups that have filed lawsuits fighting offshore wind.

And these researchers from Brown University put out a paper that found links between 18 of these small groups – through funding, membership, legal representation, and more – to bigger think tanks and conservative donors who are known to block climate policy in support of fossil fuel interests.

Though, I learned something interesting about this talking with Dr. Timmons Roberts who studies disinformation around climate change at Brown. He said the local groups may or may not know there’s a larger strategy going on.

"We found some evidence of a planning memo from 2012 that really laid out the game plan that they would use local groups that  appear entirely local, but are being fed information from a centralized set of think tanks," Roberts said.

Meanwhile, we know climate change is killing right whales. Because right whales – like most animals – decide where they’ll go by chasing their food, those copepods I mentioned earlier. But as waters have gotten warmer, we’ve seen copepods shift into different areas where there aren’t protections like boat speed limits and fishing rules to protect whales.

If the worst impacts of climate change aren’t mitigated, right whales may continue to be displaced, and, as a result, get hit by more boats, get entangled in more gear

Patrick Flanary: Much of the misinformation about right whales and offshore wind may be originating by those with a financial dog in the fight, but here locally you’ve seen it spread by people who just worry about the right whales. What do scientists think about this?

Well the half dozen right whale scientists I talked to for this story said they are uneasy when it comes to risks of offshore wind. But in my interviews, that feeling of unease was always quickly followed by this really important point about the bigger risks of climate change. I think someone who said it well was Stormy Mayo from the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, who’s studied right whales for more than 45 years. Full disclosure: His youngest son works for Vineyard Wind, but Stormy’s clear: he doesn’t particularly like offshore wind, and yet he still thinks it’s the way forward.

"I've personally always felt very much concerned about the industrialization of the sea. And offshore wind is just another one of those cases. But, having watched these animals as long as I have," he said, "it is clear to me now, that the biggest looming issue confronted by right whales is the impact of climate change on the sea. "

So instead of making a villain out of offshore wind, right whale experts like Mayo say they wish people would turn their attention to entanglements and boat collisions … which are solvable problems

Patrick Flanary: So back to the first question:  Can we expect right whales and offshore wind to safely coexist?

Eve Zuckoff: Look, we’ve seen offshore wind developers limit noise to protect right whale hearing, slow down their boats, only do major construction outside of the whales’ peak migration season, among other protections, and the federal government is making steps to codify these and other protections into law.

That said, this good work can only continue if scientists get more funding to research offshore wind impacts, and, they say, they need regulators to listen to the best practices as they develop.

But if that all goes well, offshore wind farms could be safe for right whales and they could become huge climate change mitigation tools, putting us on track to get the ocean and planet’s rapid warming under control.

Patrick Flanary: Eve Zuckoff, climate and environment reporter from CAI. She’ll be talking about offshore wind and right whales at length on NPR’s Science Friday, tomorrow at 3:20 pm. Eve, we’ll be listening.

Eve Zuckoff: Thank you, Patrick!

Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison for his FTX crimes

That's how long the internet sensation Following his conviction on seven counts of fraud related to the collapse of a cryptocurrency exchange that was once regarded as a major player in the financial industry, Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to jail on Thursday.

Judge Lewis Kaplan sentencing Bankman-Fried in a Manhattan courthouse, warning that she "will be in a position to do something very bad in the future, and it's not a trivial risk."

CNN reports that Kaplan also chastised Bankman-Fried for her lack of regret.

Bankman-Fried expressed regret for the demise of FTX in court, but he refrained from assigning blame.

According to CNN, Bankman-Fried apologized to the court for "letting a lot of people down and making them feel very let down." "I apologize for all that transpired at every turn. I also did some things that I shouldn't have done and some that I should have."

For Bankman-Fried, who has always denied committing fraud since the fall of the FTX, it was an uncommon show of remorse.

With his conviction last year, Bankman Fried, a 32-year-old former CEO who formerly partied with international luminaries like former President Clinton and quarterback Tom Brady, took a major hit.

Bankman-Fried's attorneys had requested significantly less time in prison than the 40–50 years that the prosecution had requested.

The following details pertain to Bankman-sentence Fried's and his conviction.

What was Bankman-Fried convicted of?
Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven counts of fraud by a New York jury last year.

The charges broadly covered two categories: stealing the money of customers who put their money into FTX accounts and lying to investors and creditors.

All in all, at least $8 billion in customer funds were believed to have been stolen. Prosecutors argued the money was used to fuel a lavish and luxurious lifestyle in the Bahamas, as well as for other purposes, like political lobbying and investing in other companies.

What kind of sentencing did Bankman-Fried face?
Sentencing guidelines recommended that the disgraced crypto evangelist serve up to 110 years behind bars, though prosecutors asked for about half of that.

Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried's lawyers argued that their client should serve 63 to 78 months in prison.

Ultimately, the decision was up to Kaplan, a judge who has ruled in high-profile cases including most recently presiding over E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against former president Trump.

During the Bankman-Fried trial, Kaplan kept a strictly business approach, frequently admonishing the former FTX CEO's lawyers when he felt they were going on tangents unrelated to the case.

What were the factors Judge Kaplan considered?
At its heart Kaplan had to weigh this central question: Was Bankman-Fried a criminal mastermind or a young computer geek who simply got in over his head?

In their 116-page sentencing memo, prosecutors argued the former FTX head showed "unmatched greed and hubris" and that he gambled with other people's money."

"Justice requires that he receive a prison sentence commensurate with the extraordinary dimensions of his crimes," the prosecutors said in the memo.

Prosecutors also called Bankman-Fried's crimes "one of the largest financial frauds of all time."

Bankman-Fried's lawyers, however, had pushed back aggressively against the prosecutors sentence recommendation, saying it incorrectly paints the former FTX head as a "depraved super villain."

Lawyers had also argued Bankman-Fried suffers from autism and "neurodiversity" issues.

"He can be perceived as abrupt, dismissive, evasive, detached or uncaring," the lawyers wrote in their sentencing memo.

In asking for leniency, Bankman-Fried's lawyers have also argued that customers and creditors are likely to be paid eventually in full.

During the sentencing hearing on Thursday, Marc Mukasey, Bankman-Fried's lawyer, said his client was not a "ruthless financial serial killer who set out every morning to hurt people."

"His real motivations were misapprehended and misunderstood," Mukasey said, according to CNN.

"Really he's an awkward math nerd," he added. "He loves video games and veganism, and he's compassionate to animals.

A lot of FTX holdings were held in cryptocurrencies, which have a staged a huge rebound this year, as well as in stakes of other companies that are in the process of being sold off.

Prosecutors, however, have underscored that Bankman-Fried stole customers funds, and presented letters from people around the world detailing how much the loss of their crypto holdings in FTX had hurt them, both personally and financially.

On Tuesday, fresh details emerged regarding the passing of Dr. Paul Akintelure, a prominent governorship aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State.

This is just as the deceased’s younger brother, Mr Oladapo Akintelure, said his death was not natural.

Akintelure, a medical doctor, jostling for the governorship ticket of the APC, was confirmed dead in the early hours of Tuesday.

Daily Trust gathered that the APC governorship aspirant gave up in Lagos after he had initially raised the alarm over a “serious threat” to his life.

Last Thursday, Akintelure alleged that there was a threat to his life ahead of the APC governorship primary fixed for April 25.

Though he did not give details of the threat, he noted he was compelled to voice out and address the matter with “grave concern and a heavy heart.”

Speaking to our reporter, Mr Oladapo Akintelure, the younger brother of the deceased, said the Ondo politician had been complaining of several illnesses before he finally passed on.

He explained that the deceased was admitted to a hospital after being advised to take an urgent break from his campaign to face his health.

“For the past 12 or 14 days, he had been complaining of several sudden illnesses ranging from headaches, back and chest pains.

“He was admitted at a time and had to take a break off campaign to attend to his health. At a time, we were worried and advised him to rest and we moved him to Lagos,” the younger brother said.

However, Oladapo said he believed the sudden death of his brother was not natural, describing the sad development as unfortunate.

“As a family member, I would not want to say much for now because it is still a shocking moment for us. This is not ordinary but it is unfortunate that we lost him at this critical time.”

Akintelure died at age 61.

Earlier, in a statement sent to reporters in Akure, the family members said they were griefed by his death.

They explained that Dr Akintelure, was a visionary leader who believed in the potential of the state and had been advocating for positive change.

“As a family, we understand his sudden enigmatic demise has left a void in our hearts, that of his friends, associates, supporters, and political loyalists.

“It is in light of this we seek calm and, most importantly, your prayers, as we jointly pray for the repose of the soul of Dr. Paul Akintelure.

“DPA’s passion for public service and his unwavering determination to make a difference will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all to strive for a better tomorrow,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has described as “shocking and devastating” the death of the APC governorship aspirant.

Aiyedatiwa, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ebenezer Adeniyan, commiserated with Dr Akintelure’s family, the people of Okitipupa LGA and the progressive fold in the state.

He said, “Akintelure was a wonderful human being and was a core progressive. He was very consistent and loyal to the tenets of progressive politics in Ondo State and Nigeria.

“He was a friend and associate. He conducted his private business and public affairs with so much decorum and humility to the admiration of many. We have lost a complete gentleman. He will be greatly missed.”

Aiyedatiwa added that the death of Dr Akintelure at this critical time in the life of the state was saddening and prayed for the repose of his soul.
