Entertainments / Rappers Vector Reveals One Thing He Would Change About Nigeria
« Last post by Rajih on October 15, 2024, 11:50:49 AM »

Popular Nigerian rapper Vector has revealed the only thing he would change about Nigeria.

He spoke during a recent session on Pulse Fun Facts with colleague Reminisce.

According to Vector, he would make sure Nigerians take their culture and tradition more seriously.

He explained, "If I could change anything in Nigeria, I would restrict Nigerian thinking to the traditional way. Let me rephrase: I would make sure our culture and traditions are heavily part of who we are."

"For example, in Yorubaland, Yoruba would get a higher mark in schools than any other study and in Igbo Land, Igbo language would get a higher mark than other courses so that you can get accustomed to the culture and preserve the core fabric of the country," he added.

"Anybody can wake up and create something tech and we'd become technologically advanced, a person can become wealthy too. I have realised that the only thing that sustains us is our culture, and for me, what sustains me mentally is Yoruba. If I could change one thing, it'd be focusing on our core essence as Nigerians."

Reminisce, on the other hand, stressed that his majour focus would be on changing Nigeria's system of government.

"If I could change something, it'd be the system of government. I think that's what the fundamental issue is in this country—the system of governance needs to change. There is too much interest in who governs rather than how we are governed," the rapper explained.

15-year-old Student Drags Education Ministry, JAMB And NUC To Court Over New Admission Policy

Master Chinaemere Opara, a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) Student, has dragged the Federal Ministry of Education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to court, over the government's policy which seeks to limit admissions into Nigerian universities to applicants who attain the age of 18.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had in July stated that beginning from 2025, candidates under 18 years of age would not be allowed to sit for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, a prerequisite for admission to higher institutions.

The announcement sparked intense debate among education stakeholders and parents, forcing Mamman to accept 16 years as the admission age into tertiary institutions this year.

Opara filed the suit through his guardian, Mr. Maxwell Opara, his father and a lawyer, at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, October 14, 2024.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the originating motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1512/2024 dated Sept. 30 and filed Oct. 14 by Wayne Elijah, the SS 2 student listed the ministry, JAMB and NUC as 1st to 3rd respondents respectively.

In his six reliefs, the applicant sought a declaration that the respondents’ minimum age for admission policy to restrict the age of Nigerian citizens for admission into universities in the country is discriminatory and unconstitutional.

He said it amounted to a gross violation of his right to freedom of expression as guaranteed under Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution, 2011 (as amended) and Article 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 13(2), 17 and 28 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap A9 Vol. 1 LFN.

He urged the court to declare that his right to peaceful assembly and association cannot be limited by the respondents’ admission policy.

He also sought a declaration that the policy, which restricts his age before exercising his right of association and self-determination as to when to enrol to write the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) and/or JAMB exams infringed on his right of equal access to public service.

This, he said, is guaranteed under Article 13(2) and (3) of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap A9 Vol. 1 LFN.

Opara, therefore, sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents, from attempting to disturb, breach or interfere with his rights.

He equally sought an order setting aside the policy.

In the affidavit deposed to by Maxwell, he said he is the biological father of Chinaemere.

He said Chinaemere is an SS2 student who is directly affected by the respondents’ minimum age for admission policy.

He said the policy had impeded Chinaemere’s right to freedom from age discrimination and education as enshrined in the law.

He said his son “read from the online newspaper that the 1st respondent stated that there’s no going back on the implementation of his policy which stated that any person below 16 years would not be qualified to get admission in the university no matter how brilliant the person is.

“That since then the applicant believes that his right to education has been or is likely to be violated.

“That the applicant would enter SS 3 in this 2024/2025 academic session with his plan/arrangements of writing his WAEC, NECO AND JAMB in 2025 with his expectations of gaining admission in 2025/2026 university academic sessions.

“That I know as of fact that in Nigeria, there is no specific age limit for gaining admission into universities.

“However, candidates typically must have completed their secondary education and sat for WASSCE or its equivalent.

“That I know as of fact that in Nigeria most universities require candidates to meet certain academic qualifications, such as having a minimum number of credits in relevant subjects and passing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

“That I know as of fact that in Nigeria there is no federal or state law making age a barrier for the applicant to gain admission.

“That the applicant strongly believes that he will perform excellently and make good grades in all the subjects that will be required for him to gain admission.

“That the applicant wants to study Medicine & Surgery whose duration is six years along with a mandatory 1-year youth service and 1-year compulsory Medical Externship totalling all 8 years,” Mr Maxwell said.

The case is yet to be assigned to a judge as of the time of filling this report.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Folasade Boriowo, said they were not aware of the case instituted against them by the teenager.

“I am just hearing about the case now…But then, those who are following the conversation around the minimum age will attest to the fact that it is a not closed matter," she said.

“Meetings are being held to fine-tune the process, and I wonder why some people would rush to the court."

SpyLoaded News / National Electricity Grid Collapses Again
« Last post by Rajih on October 15, 2024, 11:46:44 AM »

The National grid has collapsed again, leading to a nationwide blackout.

This marks the second occurrence within 24 hours and causing widespread outages across the country.

The first collapse took place on Monday evening, significantly disrupting both domestic and business activities nationwide.

Despite extensive investments worth billions of naira in the energy sector, Nigeria continues to struggle with unreliable electricity supply.

In a statement on Tuesday, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed another grid failure, less than a day after Monday’s incident.

“Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that there was a system collapse at 09:17 hrs, leading to a loss of power supply across our network. We are working closely with our partners and expect a speedy restoration of the grid. Updates will be provided as soon as power is restored,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) reported that power outages experienced on Monday evening were partially restored by Tuesday morning to areas within its franchise, including parts of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The country’s seat of power has been affected by several grid collapses since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023.

Some areas, such as Deidei, Suleja, Lugbe, and Kuje, saw power restored by 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday. AEDC had earlier attributed the outage to the national grid collapse, with a statement on Monday evening confirming that the collapse occurred at approximately 6:58 p.m.

“We are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid stabilizes,” the company assured its customers.

Education / UNICAL Lecturer Suspended Over Misconduct
« Last post by Miss Ifeoluwa on October 14, 2024, 05:08:34 PM »

Dr Joseph Idung, a lecturer from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been suspended by the institution.

Tribune reports that a suspension letter from Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, indicates that Dr. Idung failed to return funds collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

This decision comes just days after the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dr Joseph Akpan, was suspended and dismissed following revelations of his involvement in altering examination scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology), as reported by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC).

The administration expressed disappointment over Dr. Idung’s refusal to refund the allegedly extorted money. The letter stated that Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi has ordered his suspension from university duties to allow him to face the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which is tasked with investigating the issue.

He has also been instructed to return all university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and to avoid campus unless responding to ACTU’s summons.

Additionally, the letter advises the Bursar to place Dr. Idung on half of the salary during the suspension period.

Politics / NNPP members disown Kwankwaso as party leader
« Last post by Rajih on October 14, 2024, 10:48:38 AM »

Some factional members of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, have disowned Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the party leader.

Leading the anti-Kwankwasiya campaign at the party secretariat in Minna, Niger State, the factional National Chairman of the party, Dr. Gilbert Agbo, said Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiya group were threats to the progress and existence of the party.

Agbo stressed that Kwankwaso’s suspension by the National Working Committee in Lagos automatically terminated his membership and stake in the party.

The factional National Chairman, who also supervised the burning of the Kwankwasiya group’s iconic red caps at the state secretariat of the party in the state, said the move signified a clear statement to dissociate themselves from Kwankwaso’s faction.

He said that Governor Kabir Yusuf of Kano State was expected to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee for failing to comply with the party’s principles and supremacy.

Reacting to the development, Mallam Danladi Umar Abdulhamid, leader of the Kwankwasiya Movement in Niger State, said Dr. Agbo’s national chairman was illegal, saying that the move was meant to serve his interests rather than the interest of people.

Abdulhamid said Kwankwaso remained the national leader of the party under Dr. Ahmed Ajuji’s leadership.

SpyLoaded News / Peter Obi condemns spate of killing in Nigeria
« Last post by Rajih on October 14, 2024, 10:46:46 AM »

The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has lamented the persistent incidents of killings, kidnappings and other violent crimes across the country.

In a post via his X handle, Obi lamented the killing of some crew members of Supersports TV as well as a policeman, who were attacked in a tragic ambush along the Ihiala-Orlu Road, Anambra State, a few days ago.

DAILY POST had reported that the deceased were travelling to cover the Super Eagles 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifiers against Libya.

The former Anambra State governor, who said that the situation has continued unabated and is worse by the day, stressed that non-state actors have continued to inflict pain and sorrow on families whose loved ones are often kidnapped and sometimes killed in gruesome manners.

“In particular, I condemn, in totality, the unfortunate killing of some crew members of Supersports TV, who were attacked in a tragic ambush along the Ihiala-Orlu Road, Anambra State, a few days ago.

“These media practitioners were on their way to Uyo to perform official duty for their medium and, indeed, the nation when the tragic incident happened, resulting in their death and the kidnap of others.

“Two days ago, a few persons were also reportedly killed while some others were injured in a terror attack carried out by criminals in the Agatu local government area of Benue state,” he tweeted.

In order to discourage people from leaving their dead ones in the mortuary, the Enugu State Government has imposed a daily Mortuary Tax.

The Mortuary Tax circular addressed to all the mortuary attendants in the state is trending online.

Reacting, the Executive Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr Emmanuel Nnamani, said the Enugu Mortuary Tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to the mortuary.

According to the circular, ESIRS in line with the provisions of section 34 of the Birth, Deaths and Burials Law Cap 15 Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, hereby approves the implementation of Mortuary tax.

“The sum of N40.00 only is to be paid by owners of a corpse once it was not buried within twenty-four hours. The amount continues to count on a daily basis.

“Kindly ensure that owners of corpses make the payments before collection of the corpses for burial and then remit same to the ESIRS in any commercial bank under the mortuary tax in Enugu State IGR Account,” the circular said.

Reacting to concerns raised Nnamani explained that the tax was not new to the state, adding that it was within the Enugu State Mortuary Tax Law which had been in existence for years

He also alleged that some social media users changed the date on the circular to make it look like a new thing, clarifying that the amount to pay was only N40, not N40,000.

It is an indirect tax paid by mortuary owners, not deceased family and it is just N40, not N40,000. Since its introduction, nobody has been denied burying their dead ones.

“It means that that corpse stays in the mortuary for 100 days the mortuary is expected to pay to state a sum of N4000.

“The tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to the mortuary all the time,” Nnamani stressed.

The Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo disclosed this on Sunday in a statement signed by Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Command.

The statement made available to newsmen in Benin City gave the names of the suspects as Prince Anthony Uwa (31) and William Ugiagdor (38).

Iwo said the arrest of the suspects followed the complaint laid by the victim on September 30, 2024, that an unknown person sent her text messages threatening to burn down her house and assassinate her entire family if she did not pay the sum of N1.5 million.

He explained that on receiving the complaint, the operatives of the Command through proper intelligence tracked down and arrested the suspects, who have since confessed to the crime.

Yamu called on the people of the state, especially the youths to eschew crime and criminal activities and rather embrace and explore legitimate opportunities, pursue education and develop skills that would benefit them and their communities.
