In naming Kamala Harris as its vice presidential nominee, the Democratic Party has made history when an number of party members put out their case for Joe Biden to be the next president of the United States and encouraged people to mobilize and vote.

Democrats must beat President Donald Trump in the November election or face a volatile, devastating future in the midst of a deadly pandemic and growing climate crisis, said on the third night of the virtual Democratic National Convention, Harris and a Democrats' parade featuring women, immigrants and youth.

"We 're at an inflection point," Harris said in a strong assault on Trump in her acceptance speech on Wednesday.

"We have a President right now who turns our tragedies into political weapons," said Harris. "Constant uncertainty leaves us sinking. Incompetence makes us feel afraid. Callousness makes us feel lonely. It's a lot. So here's the thing-we can do better so deserve so much more," said Harris.

"We have to elect a president who will bring something new, something better, and do the important work-a president who will put us all together-Black, White, Latino, Asian, Indigenous-to create the future we collectively want," Harris said.

Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, is the first woman of color nominated by a major US party-Republican or Democrat-as a candidate for vice president. Harris' remarks to back Biden's candidacy capped a night of appearances by big-name Democratic politicians.

Harris talked passionately about the power of her late mother Shyamala who passed on advocacy ideals to her and testified about her family love.

"There was a warmth to it that counterbalances her reputation as a tough person," Courtney Burns, Bucknell University's associate professor of political science, told Al Jazeera.

Harris's selection as vice president "showed diversity and connection", Burns said.
