It’s difficult to keep up with all the new programming coming to Netflix these days. It used to be that when the streaming service released a new film, it was an event. Now, you log into your account and the algorithm is trying to push yet another film that you’ve never heard of. However, every now and then a film comes to Netflix that actually seems interesting. “Like Father” appears to be one of those films.

Sure, on the surface, the new trailer for the film feels like a dramedy we’ve seen a million times. A young person reconnects with their father over the course of ______ (insert life event or journey here). “Like Father” has that in spades. A young woman, played by Kristen Bell, is left at the altar and reconnects with her estranged father, played by Kelsey Grammer (who is woefully underused nowadays), while on a cruise that was supposed to be her honeymoon. Hijinks and learning ensue.

However, there’s an X-factor involved that may make this rise above the rest of the Netflix garbage that clogs up our queues – Seth Rogen. The writer/actor/director/producer shows up in a couple scenes in the trailer and actually makes you laugh. Over the last decade, Rogen has positioned himself as one of those people that makes you pay attention to every project he’s part of. “Like Father” becomes much more interesting with his involvement.

Of course, the reason Rogen is involved is that “Like Father” is written and directed by his wife Lauren Miller-Rogen. This is her first feature film as a director, but again, that makes the film that much more interesting.

We’ll see if “Like Father” rises above the rest when Netflix releases the film on August 3.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When a workaholic young executive (Kristen Bell), is left at the altar, she ends up on her Caribbean honeymoon cruise with the last person she ever expected: her estranged and equally workaholic father (Kelsey Grammer). The two depart as strangers, but over the course of a few adventures, a couple of umbrella-clad cocktails and a whole lot of soul-searching, they return with a renewed appreciation for family and life.
