After a long and storied career, Robert Redford is apparently retiring from acting. But not before he delivers one more effort.

He’s teamed up with his “Pete’s Dragon” director again David Lowery for “The Old Man And The Gun.” Lowery, known for “A Ghost Story” and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” has likened it to a crime drama, a comedy and an experimental like the aforementioned ghost tale.

One thing’s for sure, it definitely has a distinct denimy, folky 1970s vibe (the trailer features the Jackson C. Frank folk song “Blues Run The Game”). It’s also worth mentioning that ‘Old Man’ seems to have been shot on film, perhaps even 16mm. We’ll have to do some more digging to find out if that’s the case.

The movie has a great cast too, Casey Affleck (a frequent collaborator, but one who will likely do little press, I bet, given his current persona non grata status), Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tom Waits and Tika Sumpter. However, Elisabeth Moss‘ name is missing from the credits, which is odd because she was originally announced as part of the cast.

THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

Produced by James D. Stern, Dawn Ostroff, Jeremy Steckler, Robert Redford, Anthony Mastromauro, Toby Halbrooks, James Johnston, and Bill Holderman, “The Old Man And The Gun” opens on September 28 via Fox Searchlight which should mean you’ll see a festival bow before that and we’ll assume Telluride, Venice, TIFF or all of the above.
