Just like Peyton Reed of “Ant-Man” and Ryan Coogler of “Black Panther,” “Captain Marvel” directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s filmmaking résumé consists of only low-budget indies whose production and marketing budgets probably cost as much as the catering budget alone on their first blockbuster here. Given how successful “Ant-Man” and “Black Panther” were, it’s a strategy that’s been paying off. “Captain Marvel” will also have the unfortunate distinction of being the first Marvel movie released after the death of Stan Lee last November – try not to cry at his first posthumous (and second last) MCU cameo appearance. The MCU ticked off its first African-American superhero last year with that film (and first African-American director), now this year it will have its first female superhero lead (and first female director) under its belt (first Hispanic Marvel superhero when?). Tickets have now gone on sale for its 2D, 3D, and IMAX screenings, Captain Marvel heads into cinemas March 8, which appropriately happens to be International Women’s Day.
