I JUST KILLED MY DAD is a new Netflix docu-series in three parts, so it’s very quick to binge-watch. In fact, the true crime case covered makes it impossible not to. Especially due to the many twists and turns along the way.

You’ll probably be having many opinions about the people involved, but ultimately, the conclusion seems obvious. It’s made by the documentarist who also gave us The Girl in the Picture very recently.

I Just Killed My Dad tells the unbelievable, but very true, story of the Templet family. 17-year-old Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. In fact, he called the police right after. The reason why he did it is what makes this documentary a must-watch production.

Again and again, Netflix delivers on true-crime documentaries that seem to defy logic. Don’t get me wrong, the documentaries are well-made and substantiated by facts and interviews with all key witnesses. It’s just that when you watch this, you feel like the story would be too far-fetched if it were a fictional crime story.

The fact that these true-crime documentaries continuously tell stories that seem out of this world is actually a terrifying thing. Just imagine all the stories that never come out.

Whether they’re about people who are not in prison but definitely should be or people who somehow are able to stay free when they should clearly be locked up. In a crazy turn, I Just Killed My Dad manages to deliver on both.

Now, before you go thinking that this Netflix documentary is actually about a case that doesn’t deliver on justice, let me elaborate; I Just Killed My Dad isn’t very much about court drama or the trial. Instead, it’s about the full story.

Also, yes, you will get a conclusion to the true-crime case. Though some things also remain rather open in terms of the future for the young man at the center of it all.

Now, when I speak of gross injustice, I refer to the life Anthony Templet has lived up until shooting this dad – and beyond. And let me warn you, the “how” and “why” of this whole situation is quite complex and with implications that go far beyond just one family.

Watch the I Just Killed My Dad docu-series on Netflix now!
Skye Borgman is the documentary filmmaker behind I Just Killed My Dad. Her name is quickly becoming synonymous with “must-watch best Netflix true-crime documentary”. From the mind-blowing Abducted in Plain Sight (2017) to Dead Asleep (2021) and Girl in the Picture (2022), she knows how to tell a story.

For the first time, we’re getting a full docu-series from Skye Borgman. This is actually something I’ve requested for some of the previous true-crime cases covered by her in documentary films. And, trust me, this particular case can definitely handle having three episodes to tell the entire story.

The three-episode documentary series explores the psyche of Anthony Templet leading up to the events of June 3, 2019. Also, it looks for answers and finds more than you could ever have guessed (or feared).

As is often the case, be prepared to judge people far too quickly and then turn around and feel for them, when you hear their story. Well, for the most part, anyway. Do not miss out on this one!

I Just Killed My Dad is out on Netflix from August 9, 2022.
