Netflix has a new horror film called POSSESSED. This comes from Malaysia (organization). title: RASUK), but the narrative itself is fairly universal. It's a zombie movie with some CGI and some real-world effects. Sadly, neither is particularly good. Not in the manner or standard of the majority of horror films.

In point of fact, the makeup used more resembled a film project for school. or, more accurately, the undead in One Cut of the Dead. However, there was a point to the makeup in that film—which is excellent and has recently had a French remake that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival—whereas there isn't in this one.

We begin by meeting a group of friends, some of whom are related to one another, who have taken a break from school to have fun at a lake. While the girls head home, the boys return to their school, where they also live. On the other hand, one of the boys brought back something.

In the meantime, we meet Zamri, who has been hired as the school's temporary warden. He now finds himself with 27 students who begin to become zombies while he is going through his own existential crisis.

Clearly, the main cast consists of teenagers attending a sort of boarding school. The warden of the school is not the same as the warden of a prison. In contrast to the job titles "Headmaster" or "Principal" in many other English-speaking nations, it is simply a title that is utilized more frequently in British English.

The warden's title is probably appropriate given that this school appears to be modeled after the British educational system. Due to the subpar quality of the subtitles, it initially confused me. The school is even referred to as a "hostel" in the movie's final moments, which does not help make things clear.

I'm sorry to say that watching Possessed (or Rasuk) on Netflix was extremely disappointing for me. Most of the time, it felt like something I had seen before. The film doesn't really add anything new to the zombie genre. Well, maybe with the additional factor of them being cursedly infected.

Strangely, the zombie-like creatures also squeal like pigs. Creepy? Sure. Weird? Definitely.

An interesting choice is to have zombies make strange sounds that are more bizarre than predatory. I don't mind at all, but it doesn't really make sense to me. Even though we don't go into too much detail, the curse as a whole is more interesting. And then, really, what's the point?!

Check out Possessed (org. title: Rasuk) is available now on Netflix!
Possessed, which is based on a screenplay by Adib Zaini, was directed by James Lee. James Lee has previously directed action thriller Kill-Fist (2019) and horror mystery Two Sisters (2019), but his most recent project was the horror series Histeria the Series (2022).

However, I found this brand-new Malaysian zombie film to be lacking in numerous ways; Insufficiently terrifying in terms of classic horror or action. There is neither humor to keep things lighthearted nor emotion to intensify the drama. Sadly, this results in a zombie film that is easy to forget.

I was hoping Possessed would have more to offer because the Malaysian film in the HBO Asia horror anthology Folklore was my favorite. In addition, I don't have a hard time with zombie stories because I enjoy almost every subgenre.

In Santa Clarita Diet and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, I adore the horror-comedy angle. However, the style of Train to Busan or World War Z, which is more action-packed and fast-paced, is also ideal for me. even films like It Comes at Night and the Black Summer series, which are horror-drama films.

In addition, there are some fantastic zombie-themed horror films from other Asian nations, in addition to the previously mentioned Train to Busan. Two examples include the excellent film The Sadness (2021) from Taiwan and the South Korean Netflix series All of Us Are Dead, which also takes place in a school. Naturally, Kingdom, a zombie period piece on Netflix.

Simply put, you can watch this brand-new zombie movie from Malaysia on Netflix. However, there are numerous other zombie stories that are equally as good and merit your attention. And most likely first!

Netflix will begin streaming Possessed (2022) on February 15, 2023.
