Though film festivals are back up and running this fall (somewhat, at least), before then, all we really had to look back on in 2020 was Sundance in January. And thankfully, that festival was able to churn out quite a few solid features, including the forthcoming “The Nest,” from filmmaker Sean Durkin.

As seen in the new trailer, “The Nest” is a drama (verging on psychological thriller) about a married couple that leave their comfortable suburban life to venture off to England. However, once the family begins to settle into their new digs, that’s when the relationship between husband and wife begins to unravel and secrets are revealed.

The drama stars Jude Law, Carrie Coon, Charlie Shotwell, and Oona Roche. And as mentioned, “The Nest” is written and directed by Sean Durkin, who is best known for his work on the acclaimed film, “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” which was released in 2011. The new feature marks his first film in nine years.

In our review of “The Nest” from Sundance, we said, “‘The Nest’ is a somber, grown-up sort of movie, made with remarkable poise and maturity, and a level of craft so compelling it can be difficult to tear your eyes from the screen. And if it doesn’t have the catchy, religious-cult hook of Durkin’s ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene,’ it has depth and resonance that arguably outstrip his 2011 Sundance Best Director winner.”

Here’s the synopsis:

Rory (Jude Law), an ambitious entrepreneur and former commodities broker, who persuades his American wife, Allison (Carrie Coon), and their children to leave the comforts of suburban America and return to his native England during the 1980s. Sensing opportunity, Rory rejoins his former firm and leases a centuries-old country manor, with grounds for Allison’s horses and plans to build a stable. Soon the promise of a lucrative new beginning starts to unravel, the couple have to face the unwelcome truths lying beneath the surface of their marriage.

“The Nest” is set to arrive in theaters on September 18 before landing on VOD on November 17.
