Popular musician, Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, has shared his side of the story that led to the death of his former signee, Promise Aloba, aka Mohbad.
Naira Marley made the disclosure in a documentary of about two hours on Wednesday, narrating how his ex-signee began his musical journey in his label and how he eventually died.
According to him, he never bullied Mohbad nor killed the ‘Ask About Me’ and ‘KPK’ crooner.
Mohbad died on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.
In February, a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba, Lagos, acquitted Naira Marley and music promoter Sam Larry (Samson Balogun) of blame over Mohbad’s death.
The court also freed Primeboy (Ibrahim Owodunni) and Mohbad’s former manager, Babatunde Opere.
In July, the Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu recommended the criminal prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who treated Mohbad shortly before he died.
The inquest was set up by the state government to unravel the circumstances that led to the singer’s death.
Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi said the nurse acted with gross negligence by administering an injection to the singer without a doctor’s prescription.
Although the court ruled out foul play or homicide in the case, it held that the actions of the nurse were both “unlawful and professionally negligent”.
However, speaking in the new video, Naira Marley alleged that on June 7, 2020, he learnt that Mohbad was using some illegal substance called Ice.
“He told me he was taking a substance which I finally found out to be Ice (crack). I wasn’t angry, I called him and advised him and told him about the danger because I know the damage it has done to people I know from the United Kingdom. He said he got into it because of stress, but said he would stay out of it. I didn’t force him to do anything,” the singer said.
The japa crooner also showed evidence that Mohbad picked his own manager in July 2020.
“He was planning to pay Tunde 25 per cent. I said ‘No, 10 per cent. My things are always plain with him. I try as much as possible to be transparent with every ounce of our dealings, and it’s all love.
Our business is plain, even though we got accountants. We did 50-50; this is the first time I’m saying it. I paid for anything and everything and then we split 50-50,” he said.
He also debunked the rumour of Mohbad being afraid to visit the hospital, showing a WhatsApp chat from November 2020 where he visited a hospital.
On February 24, 2022, officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raided the Marlian house and took Zinoleesky and one Subomi.
Naira Marley, who said he was in Sweden at the time, noted that Mohbad was taken along because he had a physical altercation with the officers.
Mohbad went live (on Instagram) under duress shortly after he was released. While having a panic attack he accused me and others,” he said.
During the live session, Mohbad said, “’If I die, everybody na Marlian Music, Naira Marley kill me.’
“On their way to the hospital, he also accused his girl, Zino, a lot of people. He even accused our wives. Shortly after that, whilst in a vulnerable state of psychosis, he made a statement calling Zino a snitch,” said Naira Marley.
After that incident, Mohbad remained in Marlian Music.
Naira Marley said Mohbad, his parents and his girlfriend Wunmi apologised for the singer’s actions.
The ‘Soapy’ singer said that after the NDLEA incident, Mohbad stopped staying frequently at Marlian house. He said he tried to get Mohbad help by paying for health checks and medications.
On March 27, 2022, Mohbad attempted suicide. Naira Marley said he was in Puerto Rico at the time.
On his return to Nigeria, he said he spoke with Mohbad about his online search for a deadly insecticide called Sniper. Naira Marley said he also spoke with Mohbad’s parents, and they concluded that Mohbad should be taken away.
Naira Marley said that on a fateful day, Mohbad was intoxicated and came to Marlian’s house to fight his manager after they fell out.
The singer stated that following the incident, Mohbad took to Twitter, now X, accusing him (Naira Marley) of making threats to his life because he sought to part ways with his manager.
We suspect Mohbad had given his phone to someone to fabricate the story,” said Naira Marley.
On October 7, 2022, Mohbad’s lawyer wrote a letter to Marlian Music, saying the musician wanted to leave the record label. Naira Marley said he sent the payment log to Mohbad’s lawyer to show transparency in their financial transactions.
“Not long after that, in December 2022, Mohbad withdrew $72,000 from a DSP partner. All these monies he took were not his. We had to hold some of his royalty payment till he returned the money he took,” he said.
Naira Marley noted that after Mohbad withdrew the money, he stopped hearing from him and his lawyers.
He said that the last time he saw Mohbad was on October 4, 2022, on the day of the latter’s fight with his manager.
According to Naira Marley, he was in Amsterdam on the day of Mohbad’s death. He said people began accusing him of being involved in Mohbad’s death.
Naira Marley said he expected that those who were with Mohbad 24 to 48 hours before his death should have been arrested.
He also said Sam Larry explained to him that he had no hand in Mohbad’s death, and he believed him.
“I’ve never sent anybody to bully him,” he said.
Naira Marley criticised the police for detaining him for two months in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, after he returned to Nigeria to clear his name.
He, however, stated that all royalties from Mohbad’s music during his time at Marlian Music remain intact, and his lawyer, along with whoever the family appoints, can collect them.

FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 1): On December 30, 2019, I announced Mohbad, Zino and Cblack as my artistes at The Marlian Fest. In January 2020, We had conversations on how he would drop his songs. He even said he wanted to drop a song so that he could get an award with Headies. Even though he dropped hot songs, Headies never gave him an award when he was alive until after he dled. That is so sad. I believed in him because he had the zeal and energy to work. We were extremely close and we loved each other. On June 7, 2020 I was told he was taking ice. I didn't know what ice was. I did my research and found out that ice was cr@ck. Back in The UK, I knew what crack did to people's lives so I advised him. He was taking it with his friend. He thanked me for the advice and our relationship was as smooth as ever. On July 30, 2020, he picked his own manager himself, Tunde. I didn't pick his manager for him. I then called him and Tunde together and he said he planned to be paying Tunde 25% and I told him no bro, pay him 10%
On November 16, 2020, he sent me a message that he was at the hospital treating malaria. Those people saying he is scared of the hospital can see this. On Dec 21, 2020, Mohbad sent me an account with the name: Adesanya Justina Olajumoke. He said that was his new account where money should be paid into. I was like this is not your account but anyway I paid his money there. On Dec 30, 2020 he appreciated me after his one year anniversary of being my artiste. On Dec 31, 2020, he sent me the same Olajumoke account to pay money into and he still insisted it was his account. On Jan 25, 2021 he sent me that same Olajumoke account and said it was his mum's account. I knew that wasn't his mum's name. It was Wunmi's mother's account. His mother's name is Abosede. I was like what's going on, I then called him over to my place and spoke to him.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 2): When Mohbad got to my place, I told him I wasn't comfortable sending money to the Olajumoke account and that he should go and open his own account. I stopped putting money in the Olajumoke account. Mohbad and I had a very plain and open relationship. I never cheated him. We had a smooth contract and everything was 50-50. On July 28, 2021, he sent me his own personal account that he opened.
We made money. I am not going to lie, Mohbad had money. On November 10, 2021, Mohbad got his first car, a Lexus and he was very happy. On Feb 24, 2022, the NDLEA incident happened. I was in Sweden that day. They took Zino and Subomi. MOH eventually joined them, had physical altercation with the officers and they took him along with them. I had to quickly take a flight back home. After Mohbad was released from The NDLEA, he then went live under duress. While having a panic att@ck, he accused me and others of life endangerment. People around then helped him and he was driven to the hospital. On his way to the hospital, he also accused Wunmi, Tunde, Zino and others of wanting to k!lI him
When he was at the hospital, he called Zino a snitch. When I got to Nigeria the next day, I went straight to the hospital where Mohbad was. I saw Wunmi, Adura and Bode(Mohbad's cousin). I then heard that Wunmi was the last person in the room with him before he ran out and went live. I questioned her but she was incoherent. So Adura and Bode confirmed to me that Wunmi was in the room with Mohbad when he suddenly ran out. At this time, Zino was still with The NDLEA so I left there to go bail out Zino. I paid for Mohbad's hospital bills, meds and CT Scan but still I wanted to know what really happened to him. After this incident, Mohbad was still with Marlian music. He dropped 'Ronaldo' in May 2022 and 'Peace' in September 2022.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 3): On March 2, 2022 after The NDLEA incident, we all went to eat(first slide) he apologized to me, Zino and everybody. We didn't know how to tell people he was not in the right state of mind. Infact his dad and mum came to apologize. Wunmi also came with her mum to apologize. I had no choice than to forgive him and we continued our relationship. On March 9, 2022, he sent me a message on WhatsApp that he wanted to tell me something (second slide)He said he felt down and sick and he would like us to talk about it on the phone. I was in Dubai for a show that time. After The NDLEA incident, MOH wasn't staying at The Marlian house anymore but he still had his keys. On March 14, 2022, I tried to get him help, did more scans and paid for meds at different hospitals(fourth slide). On March 22, 2022, Mohbad and I spoke and he said he would like to get his own apartment. I said no problem, when he finds one, we will arrange it. Three days later I travelled for a show in Puerto Rico
On March 27, 2022, Mohbad attempted su!c!de. I was still in Puerto Rico when I got a phone call that Mohbad wanted to jump out of the window and k!Il himself. I called him immediately to ask what happened (5th slide) Remember he already made a live video few weeks earlier that if anything happened to him, people should hold me. I started encouraging him and I told him that if anything happens to you now, it is me they will hold because you already made a live video. He started apologizing again. After speaking to him on the phone, I got the address of where he was, I called Zino and other team members to go there and take it easy with him because he might be paranoid. His dad even followed them. Zino had a show, he went with them and they had fun together. After the show they went to eat, sent me videos and he said he was ok. Later on, they called me that he got a call and he said he was leaving. I told them to let him go.
PART 4: When Naira Marley came back from his show at Puerto Rico on March 29, 2022, he met with Mohbad to discuss what really happened to him that made him want to commit su!c!de. Mohbad was with his friend, Micee in the video. Moh said he wasn't thinking straight and he was forgetting things. He said he was having pains all over his body. Naira told him that su!c!de wasn't the solution and that if anything happened to Moh, people would hold him responsible because he already said it on a live video.

PART 5: After Naira Marley met with Mohbad, he then had another meeting with Mohbad's parents. Contrary to the popular belief that MOH's mum was kneeling down to beg Naira, he showed it in this video that nothing of such happened. The dad explained that MOH wasn't feeling okay and he was acting strange. He complained of body pains and leg cramps. Naira said he was told that MOH was forgetting his lyrics, phone password and his account number. MOH's parents then decided to take him with them for proper treatment and monitoring.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY(PART 6): After everything that happened, our relationship was still smooth. On Sept 3, 2022, Mohbad dropped 'Peace' video. On Sept 10, 2022, Mohbad said 'when should I come see you?' and I said 'whenever you want'.
I then told him to do the maths of the money he had with me because I changed my phone. I have nothing to hide. We had a group chat named
'Mohbad's project' where we discussed about his songs. On October 4, 2022 he sent a picture in the group where he wanted to do a featuring and he said 'confirm payment'. I told him it was the job of his manager, Tunde to talk to someone for featuring and collect payment. He said Tunde had not been doing anything for a long time and he was tired. He said he would be doing everything by himself. I said no that he could go and get another manager if he didnt want Tunde again
When Tunde joined the chat, he got mad at Mohbad and they started curs!ng each other. Tunde then said 'I am not like you who your girl is controlling. They were going back and forth. I was surprised because that was the first time I would see them having an argument. After the group chat, Mohbad started calling Tunde that same night. Tunde sent the screenshot to me. Mohbad then came with some boys to the studio. He met me but Tunde was not home. The boys didn't greet me. Mohbad who was very intoxicated, said 'Yo, Omo eru yen da?' I said who? he said Tunde. I then said 'bro, common, just sack him and pick another manager. Mohbad went outside and was calling Tunde severally.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 7): Tunde and Mohbad eventually saw each other outside and they had a fight. Someone came to the studio to get me, I went outside and stop the fight. I got Mohbad into the car and he left. After the f!ght, series of tweets went online where Mohbad accused me. He even said that he told me he wanted to change his manager. That was a lie. You would know he gave his handle to someone to tweet because the person tweeting called Tunde my brother. MOH and I had a good relationship and he knew Tunde who was his manager was not my brother
My brother is Shuddy Babatunde Fashola. He also said he had a meeting with me with no dr*g influence. We never had any meeting. After I saw his tweets, I went online to explain that what he tweeted wasn't true, he tweeted again that I was lying. I then messaged him and asked 'why do you like making up stories on me?' You said I told them to be@t you. On October 7, 2022 we got a letter of termination from MOH'S lawyer that he wanted to leave and that they wanted to see the payment log. I never hid anything from Mohbad, his payment and log were with him. We never had issue about money. Even though I have invested so much money on him, I let him go because everything was too much on me. I just took it like God used me to get him to where he was.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 8 ) : I sent the payment log to Mohbad's lawyer. In December 2022, Mohbad withdrew $72,000. Even though we had issues, I didn't want him to leave Marlian music with nothing. All these money he took were not his. Some of his royalty payments were held till he recoup the money he took. After the $72,000 he took, his lawyer stopped replying. That was the last time we ever communicated with Mohbad. On May 12, 2024, I heard Mohbad was taking the distributor to court for copyright infringement. It has nothing to do with marlian music. We had no case in court because we understood each other. The last time I ever saw Mohbad was on October 4, 2022 when he fought with his manager. After all these, Mohbad was telling people he wanted to come and apologize to me. If I knew he would d!e, 1 would have let him come
On Sept 12, 2023 when the news of his de@th broke, l was not in Nigeria. I travelled to Amsterdam. I wanted to spend time with my kids and shoot a music video with Zino. That was why Zino too was not in Nigeria. When I linked up with Zino, we went to eat. As soon as we got to the restaurant, someone among us said 'Mohbad is de@d' I said 'it's a lie, he wants to blow again. Zino looked at me and said
'people should know what they will be saying o. I went on Instagram and Instablog said Mohbad dled of ear infection. I was like how can he dle of ear infection. Then I went on Twitter and saw 'Naira Marley, finally you k!lled him. Then they started posting 2022 videos of the NDLEA incident and the f!ght he had with his manager.
FROM NAIRA MARLEY (Part 9): Then I knew someone was paying blogs to change the narrative. I couldn't even mourn Mohbad properly because of the people blaming me for what I didn't do. If we were in a working country, everyone that was with Mohbad 24-48 hours of his demise would have been arrested. They had no reason to arrest me because I was not in the country. Then Samlarry's video popped up online. I was seeing it for the first time just like everyone else. I was like 'what is this?' But I knew the video was not when MOH d!ed because Samlarry too was not in Nigeria then. I asked Samlarry questions and he said he didn't touch MOH that day, he only went to ask for his money. He sent me the video of them eating after the incident and Zlatan too was there. MOH went to write a petition that Samlarry broke his camera, the police said MOH should bring the broken camera and witnesses but he never showed up. MOH said it in a voice recording to Wunmi that if he d!es everyone should hold her responsible.
When the voice recording was played to her at an interview she said he was paranoid. How come he was paranoid at her own recording and not with mine?
I have never bull!ed Mohbad neither did I send anyone. After MOH dled, a fake Snapchat posted that I was dancing. That was not my real snapchat but people believed. After MOH d!ed, we didn't even know what k!lled him yet but his management posted and was talking about royalties and catalogue. They don't care about his demise. All that concerned them was the catalogue. When I got back to Naija I was detained in Panti for two months. When I was released, they still held on to my passport despite knowing that I was not in Naija when the incident happened. You can see how they were calling the officer in charge in the group chat that leaked. I was in the cell for two months. Autopsy didn't show what k!lled him. The police should arrest everyone again. Lastly if we get in touch with Mohbad's lawyer, we are ready to give his share to anyone the family or court picks to represent them. HIS MONEY IS INTACT.
