The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Aliyu Usman, in a statement said some members of the public had become lawless and were acting contrary to law and order and in total disregard to rights of other citizens. The state Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Lemu, said obeying law and order would not be compromised and offenders caught would face the music. NAN reports that some members of the public suspected to members of the banned Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as Shi’ites, clashed with youths in some parts of Kaduna metropolis. The areas affected by the crisis include Tudun Wada, Kinkinau, Kabala West and other communities on the Nnamdi Azikwe bypass, as shop owners locked their shops, while residents remained indoors out of fear. Police stationed at strategic locations to curtail breakdown of law. Meanwhile, the police in Plateau State said 44 members of the Shi’ite Movement, who embarked on a procession that turned violent on Wednesday, were remanded in a prison in Jos. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Peter Ogunyanwo, speaking to journalists in Jos, stated that though no one was reported dead as a result of the clash, property worth millions of naira were destroyed. According to Ogunyanwo, 45 Shi’ite members were arrested by the men of the Operation Safe Haven and handed over to the police.
