"Jawan," which translates to "Soldier" in Hindi, is the much anticipated return of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. It is a toned-down action-adventure film about a well-meaning terrorist and his mercenaries, who kidnap girls and hold them hostage.

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” Then in January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “Pathaan,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe.

“Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

Red Chillies Entertainment, the production business owned by the actor and his wife Gauri Khan, produced "Jawan," so it's not surprising that the film's standard mood swings and artificial plot are well-worn and skillfully handled.


This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t really know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train full of commuters hostage.

Synopsis: A masked vigilante (Shah Rukh Khan) sets out to accelerate some righteous societal changes in his own way. He, along with his army of super heroic women, work towards enabling justice by taking on a dangerous arms dealer, Kali (Vijay Sethupathi).

Jawan feeds off SRK’s stardom. It isn’t intimidated by him.Like a paisa vasool desi thaali, it has all kinds of flavors to satiate your taste buds. The reincarnation of 'action hero SRK' hits the sweet spot.
